After throwing Curtis out of the ring Ryan then (on his second attempt at the move) in a spinning variation of the “Rock Bottom” to get a clean pin on Riley to become the 10th FCW champion since its 2007 inception.

Ryan follows the elite list of Jack Swagger, Sheamus, Eric Escobar, Michael McGillicutty, Drew McIntyre, Tyler Reks, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, & Alex Riley… all former FCW champions, showing this belt is a stepping stone to much bigger things.

WWE Raw Writers Speak at Comic Con

Source Link: http://tv.ign.com/articles/110/1107886p1.html

IGN got take a peek behind the curtain at get a glimpse at the great and powerful Oz today at the San Diego Comic Con when WWE SVP of Creative Writing Brian Gewirtz and WWE Lead Writer Ed Kosky appeared at the WWE/Mattel Panel as part of a Q&A session surrounding Mattel's latest WWE figures line, "Defining Moments." Those in attendance actually got the chance to ask questions to the two WWE writers (something which almost never happsn) along with WWE Superstars The Miz and Eve AND witness a specially made video message from the "Macho Man" Randy Savage (yes, Randy Savage himself!) as he introduced his own "Defining Moments" figure, which will kick off the series in January 2011. After 12 years of not having a Savage figure made, you'll be able to get a new one based on his attire from his memorable "retirement" match with The Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania VII. "

Gewirtz first spoke of how much has changed in the WWE writing department over the past ten years. "It's changed a lot since back then [1999]," he stated. "Back then, we would fax our ideas to Vince [McMahon] and then hang out for a week and then check to see if any of them got used on the show." Gewirtz, a former sitcom writer who got his start in the WWE after writing impromptu promos for Triple H, Mankind and The Rock for an MTV videos segment, went on to say that things are much more collaborative now. "Friday, we pitch all our ideas to Vince. It's our big "Vince meeting" day. Saturday we put the show together and then Sunday we're usually travelling. Then we take some time to run the ideas by the talent." Gewirtz then remarked that Mike Mizanin might have no problem losing the Money in the Bank ladder match, but that his character of "The Miz" would have a huge problem with it because that's his nature.

Kosky added to that by saying "It's not so much that we're writers as we're re-writers." Kosky then talked about how, lastly, they present their ideas to the producers, many of whom are ex-Superstars, and see if they have suggestions on how to do things better. "A better idea will always trump a good idea," Kosky, who started as a production assistant for WWE Studios, said. "If it's good, it will make the show," Gewirtz said, and then smiled "Sometimes if it's bad it will make the show too." The Miz then laughingly added to that with ""Sometimes "bad" makes for great TV."

Does the RAW writer's room sometimes feel like a triage? "It's our goal to always plan as far in advance as possible, but sometimes if a superstar gets hurt, or if something's not getting over and the audience thinks it sucks, yes we have to act like a triage," Gewirtz confessed. "You can't just dictate to the audience. You have to adjust and come up with stuff on the fly."

And what happened to the role of the "manager" in wrestling? Where are the Bobby Heenans and Jimmy Harts these days? Do they still have a place? "I can't explain why there aren't any managers anymore," Gewirtz answered. "When I was a kid I loved to watch Bobby Heenan, Jimmy Hart, Luscious Johnny V and all of them. But right now I think only manager in the WWE is [laughs] on the RAW writing team. He's the Great Khali's translator. It is kind of a lost art and I'm not really sure why it evolved like that. I think one of the reasons is because the superstars themselves are so entertaining and are so verbally skilled, whereas in the past you needed a mouthpiece to talk for somebody. Now, pretty much everyone has the skill, well maybe not everyone, but most of them have the skills to get themselves over. More than someone else can do it for them. I can't say that managers are totally dead. They might come back at some point"

And if any of you were wondering what happened to the lengthy matches on RAW, or why a Diva like Eve might get stuck in match that only last for one minute…well, Gewirtz and Kosky had something to say about that too. "On RAW we have a live show," Gewirtz said. "And often times you can put aside a certain amount of time for the matches that you want to see and believe it or not, and I can't speak for this panel [smiles right at The Miz] but sometimes the talent will go over the allotted time [crowd laughs] and that creates a domino effect that cuts into the time in the next segment and then the next segment and on a live show, if a segment goes three, four minutes heavy, you've got to take time out of something else." "Kind of like the Main Event stuff, with the beginning, middle and end, is going to take up the majority of the time so if something runs long then it's the in-between stuff that gets cut," Kosky clarified. "And that's when you usually get your two minute matches. It's just the cost of doing business when you do live TV."

The talk then turned to The Miz's catchphrase ("I'm the Miz and I'm awesome!") and how it organically came about. Miz then credited Kosky for giving him his ECW catch phrase "Chicks Dig Me, Their Men Fear Me." Gewirtz then confessed "I'm awful at coming up with catch phrases. 'I'm super. I'm crazy. I'm Super Crazy' is the best one I came up with."
